This is a dark and brutal cautionary tale that traffics in any number of familiar scary-movie touchstones, but does so in consistently clever and entertaining fashion.
It's a confident, enjoyably nasty piece of work, unnerving enough to cure your FOMO about that canceled summer vacation.

Loved the movie.Marking Dave Franco's directorial debut, this sharp, engrossing horror-thriller gets by with no supernatural elements, relying entirely on scarily believable human behavior and intrusive technology. Working from a screenplay co-written by Franco, Joe Swanberg, and Mike Demski, Franco creates tension right away in The Rental with his human tableaus. Even the (sometimes dark) humor is designed to throw things off-balance. The very first shot shows Charlie and Mina leaning together over a computer monitor in such a familiar, comfortable way that we may immediately assume that they're a couple.
Everything in the movie is staged in a way that creates tension and dislocation, from Taylor's underlying racism and his sly way of deflecting it to Michelle being out-of-step with the other three. Michelle is the only one interested in going on a hike, and she takes ecstasy alone on Saturday night, becoming a kind of quirky comic relief and also a catalyst for more disaster. Brie and Franco are married in real life, and he's given her a rich role here that plays to her talents. Plus, Franco manages to comment on technology in a way that's subtle and not overbearing. He doesn't go easy on his characters, and he finds an ending that clicks into place with a true shudder. In essence, The Rental is a must-see thriller, both smart and unsettling.

A solid entry in the real estate horror genre and an impressively taut feature directing debut for actor Dave Franco. Relying far more on psychology than bloodletting, the movie nevertheless exudes a growing sense of dread that’s difficult to shake.
As far as directorial debuts go, The Rental is a strong start for Franco, who proves here he can take not just one but two different tried-and-true genre formulas and rework them into something neat.
Dave Franco has a mighty command of silence as a measurement of emotional aftershock.
While the performances ensure that the movie is always watchable, the hesitant storytelling makes it far from compelling, a bad trip about a bummer vacation.
Featuring one of the most dissatisfying, anticlimactic endings in genre memory, this paranoid thriller (the directing debut of Dave Franco) turns an isolated seaside villa into a slaughterhouse.

A decent horror / thriller movie with flaws. Most of the cast did a good job, while I see the part with the killer as the weakest. It just feels incomplete. I would call this a movie worth to watch, but not worth to watch again.

This is a different horror film than we’re used to seeing. It’s an independent, short, and simple horror/thriller. I might call it mumblegore since it relies on naturalistic acting of 20/30-year olds and a low budget. It follows a pair of couples staying in a rental house, when they realize something strange and creepy is happening. The film has some things I appreciate like characters blatantly calling out racist characters’ microaggressions and a plot that subverts expectations. However, the film is weak in its motivations and the sense of emptiness it carries. There’s not much going on and some plot decisions are strange and frustrating, in a sense that it ruins parts of the movie. Overall, my favorite part of the film was probably how interesting the montage scene is.

O filme é entediante. Estou aproveitando a quarentena pra tirar minhas próprias conclusões sobre os filme de terror, já que eles são mto mal avaliados em geral. Esse filme é um daqueles que merece uma nota baixíssima. Não prende a atenção, não tem um bom enredo. E o pior.. NÃO ASSUSTA!
