Is Netflix looking to cast Jason Momoa in The Witcher prequel?

The rumors floating around the Internet are true: Netflix is looking to cast Game of Thrones and Aquaman star Jason Momoa as the lead of the recently announced prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin. This news comes shortly after casting has begun for the series.

UPDATE: Shortly after the rumor was corroborated, Momoa shared a popular piece of fan art on his Instagram story. The fan art (created by @SPDRMNKYXXIII) depicts Momoa as a witcher next to Henry Cavill’s Geralt. We know Netflix is interested in hiring Momoa, and now Momoa has shown interest in return. If all goes well in contract negotiations, Netflix may announce Momoa’s casting officially in the coming weeks.

ORIGINAL STORY: The rumor was first reported by We Got This Covered and quickly traveled across the Internet. Though WGTC has had a somewhat unreliable track record in the past, they correctly reported on the prequel itself and its setting before it was announced by Netflix. Now it appears that WGTC was once again right-on-the-money, as we were able to confirm Momoa’s involvement with two independent sources. One of these sources is Production Weekly which is as reliable a source as it gets in the filming industry and another – insider Daniel Richtman.

From what we were told, Netflix are hoping to cast Momoa in the lead role: the first witcher ever created. It’s important to note that Momoa’s deal has yet to be finalized, and it’s entirely possible that someone else will eventually land the role – so keep your hype in check for now.

The prequel will be overseen by The Witcher writer/producers Lauren Hissrich and Declan de Barra (who will serve as showrunner). “I am beyond excited to tell the story of The Witcher: Blood Origin,” de Barra said in the show’s first press release. “A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books: What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonization and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civilization’s true story behind. The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.”

Blood Origin is currently slated to film in the UK after The Witcher season two wraps production in February 2021. The prequel is likely to release early in 2022.

  1. It would have been better to have Jason Momoa play either Vesimer or one of the other Witchers from Geralts past, In the Current witcher series. Though I can’t be certain until I’ve seen the Prequel.

  3. NNNOOOOOOO!!

While he seems like a nice enough guy in general, Momoa isn’t all that great an actor. I’m pretty sure it’s a move to get non-witcher viewers to be swayed by name recognition into watching. But I’m also pretty sure it’ll backfire on them. His best acting was when he played a nearly mute brute, Geralt requires a much more subtle hand to pull off.

    1. His best acting was in SGA. And he was damn good in that. Plus he won’t be playing Geralt, he’ll be an entirely different Witcher as said above.

    2. The present ex-Superman does alot of grunting, looking, and mostly mute dialogue. So what’s your complaint again?

    3. He wouldn’t be playing Geralt tho? Wtf are you on about, the prequel takes place far before Geralt existence

  4. Wait, the witchers were created by Alzur and Cosimo Malaspina in the 950s, and the conjunction of the spheres is 1400 years before the events of the Series, not 1200. Is that a choice to change the dates or a mistake ?

    1. My dear … did you see the team that will write this? Expect worse things … there is NO Polish professional who knows the folklore of The Witcher on the team …. but im a “cool people”

  5. No……They are again bullshitting with the castings…..why..I don’t get it. Henry Cavill is the best ever as Geralt…why Momoa…plzzz don’t do it Netflix u will kill the witcher.

  6. I REALLY hope they’re not talking about replacing Henry Cavill with ANY other actor. I can’t think of anyone else that could step into that role and make it worth your time to watch. Him and Jasker, I hope that’s spelled correctly, are perfect together.

  7. Are you kidding!!,Jason Mamoa is a great actor. Hes going to really mae the whole series so much better. Can’t wait to see what he does. I just love them both. It will be a great combo.
